Teens Making Change in Northern Virginia - The Kindness Project

By Jourdan Card, Centreville-South Riding Macaroni Kid December 12, 2018

Although they are only Sophomores in high school, Fiza and Mya are making a huge difference in our community. They sat down this summer with a vision and put it into action to create The Kindness Project: a teen-driven charity organization seeking to help those most in need in the D.C. Metro area. In addition to helping neighbors in need they are helping teens realize the value and benefit of spreading kindness through small, but meaningful acts.

The Kindness Project is an organization aimed at students in grades 6 through 12. The goal is to get kids out to volunteer. The Kindness Project partners with local nonprofits to determine their needs to help those less fortunate. Fiza and Mya then create volunteer events and encourage their fellow peers to join them. They organize everything from event marketing, volunteer recruitment, donation requests and event logistics.

This fall they held their first event collecting toiletry items for Thrive in Washington D.C. With the help of 38 teen volunteers, and donations from the community the team was able to deliver more than 1,600 toiletry items.

When asked why they started The Kindness Project:

Mya said, “We’re really encouraging teens to give back not only because it will help people, but because it’s going to make them feel good and in turn, they’ll want to do more.”

Fiza said, “One small act of kindness spreads to others. When they see kids their age spreading kindness it will inspire them to do the same and create a chain reaction.”

Fiza and Mya are making a huge impact in our community and communities across the D.C. Metro area. Their goal is to see more volunteers at upcoming events. See below for ways to get involved or how to help.

The next volunteer event is taking place December 16, 2018 at 3 p.m. at TopKick, South Riding. This event is family-friendly and they are inviting the entire family out to help with Project Warmth. Volunteers will be making and decorating fleece scarves & helping decorate the Project Warmth holiday sock tree with your donated socks.
