Summer Fun Activities to Plan For Now

By Stefanie Egee April 16, 2018

Summer is right around the corner and the lazy days without a schedule and alarm clocks are simply bliss. But as parents we know some planned activities are necessary to maximize summer fun and, let’s be real, to save our own sanity. The activities below require advance registration or could sell out so you should plan for them now to make sure you can include them on your summer fun calendar.

Summer Camps - Summer is a great time to explore, try a new activity, and make new friends. Summer camps in Loudoun offer just that and much more. The Macaroni Kid Loudoun Summer Camp Guide is full of local camp options including drama, arts, STEM, ice skating, multi-themed and more more. Vacation Bible Schools at local churches and Loudoun County Parks & Rec also offer affordable summer camp options for all ages.

Sign up for a CSA - A CSA is Community Sponsored Agriculture program or a weekly share of produce from a local farm. Joining a CSA is a great way to discover new foods, support local farmers, and get outside. Many farms offer pick your own fruit and vegetables as part of the CSA so you get to spend time in the fields for a family farm to table experience. And larger farms like Great Country Farms in Bluemont offer a host of fun activities that are included with your CSA membership, like playgrounds, obstacles courses, gigantic slides, and jumping pillows, making for a great day at the farm.

Theme Park Preschool Passes - Have a preschooler in your family? Sign up for a Preschool Pass to Kings Dominion, Busch Gardens, and Water Country USA for free admission for your preschooler (age 3-5) this summer. Act before the end of May to take advantage of these freebie programs.

Free National Park Pass for Fourth Graders - If you have a fourth grader in the house, sign up for the National Park Foundation Every Kid in a Park pass. Fourth graders (including homeschool equivalents) and their families can discover America’s national parks through the end of the summer with this pass - for free! Find out more here

White House and Capitol Tours - Tourist season is in full swing in the summer so now is the time to book tours of the White House and United States Capitol to ensure you get the dates you want. Contact your Member of Congress to set up these tours. After the self-guided White House tour, be sure to head over to the White House Visitors Center on Pennsylvania Avenue. There are Interactive exhibits, a gift shop, and, since the White House is a National Park, kids can complete activities and earn a Junior Ranger badge.
