Below is a recipe for brown bread, a simple recipe which would be easy to make with kids.
IRISH BROWN BREAD RECEIPE
3 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
1 large egg, lightly beaten.
Preheat the oven to 375.
In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt.
In a small bowl, whisk buttermilk & egg; stir into the dry ingredients with a wooden spoon until a rough dough forms. Knead until smooth on a lightly floured work surface. Form the dough into a loaf and place in a buttered 8 x 5 metal loaf pan. Bake at 375 for approximately 50min, until the bread has risen about a half-inch above the rim. Once the bread is removed from the pan, it should sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Allow to cool. Serve warm or at room temperature with fresh whipped butter & jam.
